Laser Therapy For Ankle Sprain Is The Key

By Carolyn Russell

There's nothing more unfortunate than having an injury that lessens the mobility of an individual. Even though many times ankle pain can be considered a sports injury, it is one that is most commonly found among injuries. This injury can sometimes occur due to a sudden twist of the ankle. Laser therapy for ankle sprain may be the key to getting things back to normal.

The pain may feel like it is coming from outside on the ankle, however it is pain that is generating from the joint. Usually in cases that are mild, swelling or bruising may not occur, however pain can be felt due to compression of ligaments and soft tissue on the inside. Sometimes symptoms can vary from being very mild to very severe. Usually when people have a mild sprain they can go throughout the day and live their lives, however those that are more severe in nature may require hospital treatment.

Depending upon the severity of the sprain, can determine the grade that it will received. For example, mild pain accompanied by a little stiffness is considered minor. Usually individuals can still participate in athletic activities. Ligaments may have been mildly torn. This is characterized as being a grade 1 sprain.

Those that experience severe pain and have difficulty in walking have experienced grade 2. Athletes usually are not able to play. Swelling, bruising, and stiffness may occur. Tearing that is moderate in nature has usually occurred, marked by an unstable joint. Usually there has been a total rupture of a ligament. Instability of the joint is very great, as well as the symptoms of swelling and bruising. This is known as a grade 3 sprain.

Not only does damage occur in the ligament, it also occurs in the cartilage, joint capsule, tendons, and other surrounding tissues. A complete rupture of ligaments within a sprain can cause dislocation as well as a fracture within the bone.

Fractures usually occur when a ligament tears away a very small piece of a bone. Usually this is not known unless a injury does not heal in a specific amount of time. Sometimes osteochondral lesions occur when the cartilage lining the top of a talus bone is torn.

Laser therapy is important because it helps to increase the lymphatic flow which reduces swelling. Increased blood flow helps to move nutrients to certain tissue areas in order for repair and removal of damaged tissue. It also is great in increasing production of endorphins.

This form of treatment also helps to speed up the body's healing process, which means a person can start rehabilitation a lot sooner. Sprains that are mild in nature can sometimes see improvement after 3 visits. Laser therapy also helps to decrease the formation of prostagladin, which is very helpful when it comes to reducing pain.

Athletes all over the globe are familiar with laser therapy. It has become a great asset to the healing process. Taking the proper care with these type of injuries can result in quicker rehabilitation. Athletes have gained hope knowing that help does exist for ankle injuries no matter what grade they are.
