Some Natural Supplements For Autistic Children One May Consider

By Dennis Peterson

Autism spectrum disorder, ASD is a developmental disorder characterized by a social skills and language deficits. There are many subtypes of this condition and one in every seventy children in the United States is thought to have one form of the condition or the other. Causes may be either genetic, environmental or both. Associated symptoms include seizures, sleep disturbances as well as varied sensory disorders. There are several natural supplements for autistic children that have been found to improve symptoms.

Omega 3 fatty acids are among the most commonly prescribed nutrients. The backing of this practice is the available anecdotal evidence that a number of children living with the condition have indeed benefited from the administration of the supplement. As a matter of fact, a significant number of physicians now use the supplement routinely in their management of the condition. A number of randomized controlled trials, however, suggest that the supplement is only beneficial to a select group of patients.

Phospholipid fatty acids are a part of cell membranes of all body cells. Research has shown that abnormalities in the metabolism of these membranes may indeed be a contributing factor of some of ASD symptoms. Other findings also show that the levels of these fatty acids are lower in ASD children compared to those without it. Dietary sources include butter, margarine, potato chips and processed meats among others.

Several vitamins have also been found to be quite effective. The main ones include vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Vitamin B6, pyridoxine, has mainly been shown to improve sleep patterns and gastrointestinal function in ASD patients. It is also said to have some benefits in neural function. More levels of B6 increase the formation of dopamine, an important neurotransmitter in the brain. The levels of dopamine are relatively lower in ASD patients.

Rich sources of vitamin B6 include bread, pork, soya beans, poultry, vegetables and whole cereals. Vitamins C is readily available in a number of vegetables and fruits. These include, among others, pineapples, mangoes, strawberries and citrus juices. The vitamin is also vital in the synthesis of some neurotransmitters in the brain. It also has a general calming on the brain. Commercially available supplements may be a single vitamin or the B complex of vitamins.

Amino acids are the body building blocks. They make up proteins which in turn make up part of almost every tissue in the body. In autism, their main benefits include improvement of concentration, providing a calming effect and being a source of neurotransmitters. Most amino acids are in low levels in patients with autistic disorders. The only exceptions include glycine, glutamic acid and phosphoserine.

Minor but important supplements include carnosine and magnesium. Carnosine helps to improve vocabulary affected children. The supplement is requires in low doses. The deficiency of magnesium is major cause of neurological disorders. Its administration to affected children, has been shown to result in a major improvement of symptoms. There is a major reduction of panic attacks and stress. This in turn improves the quality of sleep.

Nutrition therapy is just but a small aspect of management for autism spectrum disorder. This means that It is not used in isolation. Rather, It is combined with other forms of treatment such as the use of drugs, behavioural therapies and occupational therapy among others. Each of these treatments plays an important role in the achievement of the final objective. The use of supplements should be done in close consultation with the primary physician.
